Christmas in Athens 2026: Lights, Markets and a Boutique Hotel Base

Christmas in Athens is mild, festive and refreshingly uncrowded. From late November to early January the city lights up with a giant tree in Syntagma Square, an outdoor ice rink, fairground rides in Gazi and cosy markets, while the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora are at their calmest. Stay at The Gem Society Boutique Hotel & Spa, at 3 Aristidou, about 10 minutes on foot from Monastiraki and Ermou Street, and you can walk to much of the festive season, then return to the spa and a warm table at Muse Bistro.

Christmas in Athens 2026: Lights, Markets and a Boutique Hotel Base

1. Syntagma Square: the Christmas tree and festive lights

The city’s Christmas tree stands in front of the Parliament, surrounded by themed decorations, thousands of lights and live music. The lighting ceremony traditionally takes place in late November. From the hotel it is around 20 minutes on foot, or one metro stop from Monastiraki to Syntagma. Warm up afterwards with a hot chocolate at a café on the square.

2. Ice skating at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)

Skate beside the canal with Christmas music, light installations and dancing fountains as your backdrop. With free admission, online pre-registration advised, skates provided, sessions of up to 40 minutes and a minimum age of 5. It is a short taxi ride from the hotel, and our concierge can arrange it.

3. The Christmas Factory at Technopolis, Gazi

Fairground rides, a Ferris wheel, a Christmas market, workshops and children’s theatre fill the former gasworks in Gazi. Technopolis sits beside Kerameikos metro station, one stop from Monastiraki, which makes it an easy evening out.

4. Christmas markets: Kotzia Square and Pedion tou Areos

Kotzia Square, close to the hotel, holds its Christmas market from 19 December to 6 January 2027. The Christmas Village in Pedion tou Areos Park runs through the festive season too. Look for handmade gifts, sweets, hot chocolate and mulled wine.

5. Little Kook, Psiri: Athens’ most festive café

Tucked into Psiri at Karaiskaki 17, this fairytale-themed café dresses up every December with lights, decorations and costumed staff. It is a short walk from the hotel and a favourite for photos and festive cakes. Expect a queue, and go early in the day.

6. Philopappos Hill at dusk

For a quieter moment, walk up Philopappos Hill and watch the Acropolis and the city lights come on. It is a gentle way to end a day of sightseeing before heading back to the hotel.

7. Christmas shopping on Ermou Street

Athens’ main shopping street is about 10 minutes from the hotel, with international brands, local boutiques and festive windows. Shops usually extend their December hours. For something more personal, visit the boutique in our lobby for curated gifts.
